Founder & President
Melissa Mathews founded The Mathews Group in 2010 when a light bulb went on that there was an opportunity to join forces with other talented communication professionals and create a group with better work-life balance. The effort has paid off. The Mathews Group allows its members to customize their work arrangements in order to accommodate life’s demands and be part of fun, challenging and interesting work for a diverse group of clients, from nonprofits to Fortune 100 companies.
By pioneering a unique consulting business model based on flexibility and collaboration, The Mathews Group is more responsive to its clients than many traditional agencies. The innovative business model attracts high-quality professionals, each deeply experienced within their specialty, and the network of practitioners is Melissa’s pride and joy. They function as a built-in support group, helping each other brainstorm everything from client projects to parenting problems.
Melissa’s excitement about The Mathews Group is infectious. “We’re a fun and dynamic group, and people simply enjoy working with us. We have positive attitudes and a no-drama ethos. We just get work done,” she says. “I think clients appreciate the deep partnerships we build with them.”
Melissa provides the overall strategic vision for The Mathews Group and is never afraid to roll up her sleeves. She relishes the full gamut of client work, including: planning, problem-solving, speechwriting and her secret addiction – editing. Melissa is a natural leader and communicator, and she is motivated to find unique and creative ways to help client organizations.
Prior to The Mathews Group, Melissa earned her crisis communicator credentials in newsrooms and war rooms. After many years of writing, editing and producing breaking news for CNN, she left broadcast journalism to become a spokesperson for NASA, where she specialized in outreach to nontraditional audiences, including high-profile placements such as NBC’s Meet the Press and Today Show, ABC’s Good Morning America, and even The Food Network.
Melissa has three children and is currently accompanying her family on an international posting to the Middle East.
