Vice President & Chief Strategy Officer
Tia Over likes living up to her unique last name: over-achieving on behalf of her clients and overwhelming her team with smarts, support, sincerity and – sometimes – silliness. In her leadership role with The Mathews Group as vice president and chief strategy officer, Tia also heads up our West Coast presence.
Tia provides leadership on account strategy and heads up the Lockheed Martin corporate engineering portfolio and National Engineering Forum account accounts. “I’m also responsible for supporting Mathews Group business development and leading our team collaboration and operations efforts – a role I truly love as I am a strong believer in our virtual agency model,” says Tia. “I want to do everything I can to help our members across four time zones operate as an effective team on behalf of our clients, and have a whole heck of a lot of fun along the way.”
Tia joined The Mathews Group in 2010 and immediately put her outstanding client management talents, sharp writing skills and creative problem-solving to work helping the agency scale from three to seven practitioners and grow its client list to include Fortune 100 companies, such as Honeywell ACS, Phillips 66, Lockheed Martin and Pfizer.
Tia launched her public relations career in politics and public service. She first worked for a small political consulting and public affairs shop providing campaign strategy support to state legislative, gubernatorial and congressional races. In 2004, Tia landed as a White House appointee at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., as it was still in crisis mode following the Space Shuttle Columbia accident. Although the agency had a robust and legendary external communications presence, communications to its employees were almost non-existent. Tia created an internal communications strategy for NASA’s Headquarters in Washington and guided NASA’s space centers in developing their own local programs. At NASA, Tia began to hone an expertise for working with scientists and engineers, which prepared her well for her next career move. She returned to her native Pacific Northwest to join Waggener Edstrom (now WE Communications) on their Microsoft account. In her five years with Waggener Edstrom, Tia worked on several product launches for the enterprise software business and cultivated strong relationships with leading global IT analyst firms.
Tia uses her storytelling talents in her volunteer work as well. She serves on the board of directors and coordinates Mathews Group’s pro-bono communications and PR work on behalf of Ameena Project, a Pacific Northwest-based nonprofit that is 100 percent volunteer run and operates a preschool in Kiang’ombe, Kenya.
